Border Patrol Agent Teofilo Rodarte Arrested for Stealing Woman’s Purse, Pleads Guilty to Burglary & Identity Theft

Douglas police have arrested a Border Patrol agent on suspicion of stealing a woman’s purse and using her credit cards to buy $231 in goods at a Wal-Mart.  Agent Teofilo Rodarte, 32, of El Paso, was arrested on Friday after he admitted wrongdoing to Douglas police, said Sgt. Jose Duarte. He’s being charged with one count of burglary, three counts of forgery, one count of theft and eight counts of illegal use of a credit card.  Rodarte is an agent from the El Paso sector who was working in Douglas on temporary assignment. He was off-duty at the time of the theft.

Police say a woman reported her purse stolen Thursday morning after she left it in her car at a gas station. She later reported that her credit cards were used at Walmart for $231 in purchases.  Officers identified [Teofilo] Rodarte as a suspect after watching the store’s surveillance video and say that Rodarte admitted to the theft, which occurred while he was off-duty.

According to Sgt. Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Department on Aug. 4 Douglas Police Officers investigated a theft of a purse that had taken place at the Chevron Gas Station, located at the 100 block of 16th Street.

The victim informed officers that her purse had been stolen from a blue Nissan Sentra during the early morning hours.    gt. Duarte said his officers were informed that the purse had been left on the floorboard of the vehicle and when the victim went to retrieve her purse, she found it missing. The victim stated that her purse was valued at approximately $300 and that she had her cell phone, identification, multiple credit cards, and cash inside of the purse.  Later that same morning, the victim informed the Douglas Police Department that someone had used her credit cards at the local Wal-Mart Store for multiple purchases totaling approx. $231.   While continuing their investigation at the Wal-Mart store and through their surveillance video the DPD officers observed a male subject, identified as Teofilo Rodarte, 32.    With the assistance of Douglas Border Patrol, DPD officers met with Rodarte on Aug. 5 at the Douglas Border Patrol Station and conducted an interview with him during which time they were able to get a statement from the agent in which he admitted to the wrongdoing.

Store surveillance video reportedly showed a male suspect using the credit cards to buy merchandise through multiple transactions and that suspect was identified as an off-duty Border Patrol agent from the El Paso, Texas area. He was reportedly on temporary assignment in Douglas.  Further investigation identified Rodarte as the suspect and when police officers interviewed him the next day at the Douglas Border Patrol Station he admitted “to wrongdoing and officers were able to retrieve some of the merchandise that … [Teofilo] Rodarte had purchased,” Duarte said.  Rodarte was taken into custody and remains in the Cochise County Jail.

A Border Patrol agent has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a woman’s purse and using her credit cards to go shopping at a Wal-Mart in Douglas in southeastern Arizona.  Douglas police told the Arizona Daily Star on Tuesday that 32-year-old Agent Teofilo Rodarte of  El Paso, Texas, was arrested Friday on charges of burglary, forgery, theft and illegal use of a credit card.

Douglas Police have arrested 32 year-old Teofilo Rodarte, an off duty U.S. Border Patrol agent from El Paso, after they say he stole a purse from a woman’s vehicle.  Officers were called to the Chevron gas station in the 100 block of 16th Street. Later that morning, the woman told police that somebody had used her credit cards at the Douglas Walmart for $231 in purchases. Viewing Walmart surveillance videos, officers spotted a man who used the credit cards on several transactions. They were able to identify the man as [Teofilo] Rodarte and brought him in for questioning.  Rodarte admitted the actions and returned some of the items he bought, including clothes, a cellphone and a prepaid calling card, Duarte said. Rodarte was taken to the Cochise County jail  …  Rodarte’s temporary assignment in Douglas has been terminated, and he’s back in El Paso doing administrative duties pending resolution of the case, Brabble said.

KFOX14 went to [Teofilo] Rodarte’s Horizon City home. Family members said as of Wednesday afternoon, all charges had been dropped. However, a call to the Cochise County Attorney Edward G. Rheinheimer showed the county is still deciding whether this case will go to court.

Earlier this month in Douglas, a Border Patrol agent working in Arizona on temporary assignment was arrested by Douglas police on suspicion of stealing a woman’s purse and using her credit cards to buy $231 in merchandise at Walmart.  The agent, Teofilo Rodarte, 32, was sent back to his home base of El Paso to do administrative duties pending resolution of the case, which is also being investigated by Homeland Security’s Inspector General.

A man who allegedly stole a purse in Douglas in early August while he was an off duty Border Patrol agent has entered into a plea deal in Cochise County Superior Court, according to court records.  Teofilo Rodarte, 32, is scheduled for sentencing in Division 3 court on Oct. 28. He pleaded guilty in the plea agreement during a hearing in Division 5 court on Wednesday, and Judge James Conlogue ordered a pre-sentence report.

An off duty Border Patrol agent who stole a woman’s purse in Douglas in August was sentenced to serve three years of probation Friday in Cochise County Superior Court.  Teofilo Rodarte, 32, had been temporarily assigned by Border Patrol to the Douglas area from El Paso, Texas, was charged with fraudulent schemes and artifices, three counts of computer tampering, third-degree burglary, two counts of identity theft, three counts of forgery and three counts of theft.  According to court records the defendant entered into a plea agreement for this case in September.  He pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and identity theft.

A Border Patrol agent from El Paso temporarily assigned to work in Douglas was sentenced to three years probation for stealing a women’s purse.  Teofilo Rodarte, 32, pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and identity theft in Cochise County Superior Court.  Cochise County Prosecutor Doyle Johnstun said the agent reached a plea agreement and was sentenced last week  …  Judge Wallace Hoggatt also ordered Rodarte to pay $911 in restitution, a $1,000 fine and a $840 surcharge.
